Stand Up Paddle Magazine Article

Stand Up Paddling on the Outer Banks was highlighted in the latest copy of Stand Up Paddle Magazine (Summer/Fall 2009) as part of a "Paddle Across America" series. We would like to thank Reid Inouye, Publisher, for including us in his magazine. As Reid states, "So, if you've seen it and had a taste of it, pass it on to your family, friends and neighbors, for the journey on the water had just begun. Malama pono (Take Care) and enjoy the glide,". If you have not seen this magazine you need to check it out! (http://www.standuppaddlemagazine.com)

OBX Marathon Art

The Outer Banks Marathon is about a week away and we are pleased to note that Stephanie Kiker won the art competition for this years race. Stephanie also designed our Outer Banks Stand Up Paddle logo found on our website, T-shirts and hoodies. We will be running the 1/2 marathon to help stay in shape for the upcoming holiday season and winter stand up paddling.

2009 Adult Art Competion

Local Outer Banks artist, Stephanie Kiker, a Hatteras Island native and graphic designer, created the winning piece of artwork for the 2009 Outer Banks Marathon Adult Art Competition.  Stephanie, a Hatteras Island native, has used the natural beauty and abundant wildlife on the islands as inspiration for her expressions since first moving to the area in 1985.  She graduated from the School of Design at North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design and has since pursued her career as a working artist, working in a number of mediums, including pen and ink, colored pencil, soft pastel and block prints.  Stephanie's interpretations of her subject matter are original and her style is unmistakable.  Her work moves from realism to the bold graphic shapes, patterns and colors of her well-known and unique aboriginal style.  Along with prints of her art, Stephanie offers pillows, ceramic tiles, cutting boards and even a coloring book with her artwork.  As a graphic designer, Stephanie publishes several Art and Craft Gallery Guides.  Her artwork will be displayed on marathon apparel and as our 2009 race poster, available for purchase at the Race EXPO.  It can also be found on the cover of the 2009 BeachBook, the official phone directory of the Outer Banks.

Outer Banks Ocean Paddle Race

On July 25th, Outer Banks Stand Up Paddle fielded seven paddlers for the 16th Annual Surfrider Foundation's One Mile Ocean Paddle Race. The race was extremely well organized. A brisk southerly wind combined with ocean surf made for a challenging event. Michele won the Women's SUP race and is shown with her Gerry Lopez SUP fin set prize. It was a great opportunity for long & short boarders, kayakers, and paddlers to share the ocean and talk story over a delicious lunch. We look forward to supporting future events and the Foundation's charter of protecting our beaches.

Great Lesson

Received a very nice note from Cindy Crissman following her stand up lesson with Cindy Corlett. They were both first time paddlers that thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I came home after my SUP lesson at Outer Banks Stand Up Paddle in Duck, NC and put the fins on my board. Not living on the coast I innediately went to the nearest lake and applied all the things Rob and Michele taught me. Up until then I was too nervous to try to SUP by myself. Here's the thing... I got to the lake and realized how much smaller my board was from the one I learned on. My board was made specifically for me by Ken Ebert at Segway Composites in Colton, CA. We had many long discussions about the size and decided on a 10'2" board - but I learned in Currituck Sound on a 12'+ board. However, the lesson from Rob and Michele gave me the confidence needed to be able to get up on this significantly smaller SUP board. I am totally hooked on paddling and have gone to the lake almost every day. Rob and Michele offered good advise for standing up, getting off, turning, falling off, and how to keep a straight upper arm to get more power through the paddle. Finally, Rob gave me a great deal on "The Big Hook" - a way to easily carry the SUP board to the water and back. It works like a charm. I will recommend Outer Banks Stand Up Paddle to everyone I know. It's a great sport in Hawaii and California - why not on the east coast, too? OUTER BANKS STAND UP PADDLE IS THE GREATEST! Thank you.
